ICYMI: How a telephone can keep pets in their homes and out of your shelter!

Just because someone is having pet problems doesn’t mean the shelter is the best place for that pet. Often, pet owners just need some support: behavior help, food, assistance with veterinary bills, tips on pets-allowed housing. As part of their implementation of the Alternatives to Intake initiative, the San Francisco SPCA operates a comprehensive call center to divert as many animals as possible from the shelter and keep them in their loving homes whenever possible.

Not only did they walk other shelters through the steps to setting up a similar program in the presentation below, they made their proven phone scripts available to other organizations. Download them here (Excel) or here (HTML view).
